PVD VS CVD COATING

PVD is preferred over CVD in the coatings of dies, punches, and forming tools due the lower temperatures PVD uses during treatment to preserve the hardness that is treated with heat and austenitizing temperatures of some of the forming tool substrate materials.

The term "wear" can be used to refer to the impact of abrasion or corrosion on contact with other materials such as tools, grit and/or tools. "Toughness" is defined as a tool or die's or tool's resistance to cracking, breaking or chipping in the course of use. Each material used to fabricate a punch will have characteristic wear and toughness levels. The choices of materials are according to the following:

High wear resistance and LOW durability

The particular forming process will determine which material to select. Wear resistance can be affected by the degree of hardness and the coatings that are applied to the tool.
